Hardware Corner: ATCA goes wireless

The Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture standard is set to have a broad effect on the telecom industry, and next-generation mobile broadband standard LTE is set to have a major impact on the global wireless market. Now, the two technologies are pairing up in an LTE core network deployment by KDDI, Japan's second-largest mobile carrier.

KDDI will be deploying solutions that include an ATCA access gateway from Nortel Networks. Because Asian mobile markets are usually farther ahead technology-wise than other markets around the world, this deployment could give many service providers elsewhere an initial real-world look at ATCA's benefits in an LTE environment. However, ATCA also may be a factor in ongoing upgrades to current-generation networks, such as CDMA EV-DO.
