Audiocast: Setting the stage for 100G

RockyIf you are heading for NXTcomm in Las Vegas next week, don't be surprised if 100 Gbps transmission capacity turns out to be a hot topic and major source of product, service and strategy news. Only in the last year have 40G network routes become common, but bandwidth-chomping applications and a lot of optimism about future bandwidth growth already have the industry pushing for a jump to 100G.

What applications are signaling the need? What has the telecom industry done thus far to prepare for the migration? What indication have carriers given that they are ready to invest, and when can we expect 100G to become a reality? I recently spoke with Rocky Kler, vice president and general manager of the optical network systems division at NEC America, who provided his perspective on each of those questions and more.
