DIRECTV’s SKY Brazil Subsidiary Launches First 4G Wireless Network Based on TD-LTE Technology in Latin America
Brazil’s Largest Satellite TV Operator Begins Broadband Service in Brasilia Today; Will Expand to Other Brazilian Cities Next Year
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DIRECTV’s Latin America subsidiary SKY Brazil, the largest satellite TV service in Brazil, has entered the broadband wireless market with the region’s first 4G wireless service based on TD-LTE technology, offering consumers broadband using the fastest and most advanced wireless technology network in the world.
The service supports data-intensive applications such as video, music and games popular among Internet users. Beginning today, the service will be available throughout the Brasilia metropolitan footprint, including neighborhoods in that area currently lacking an advanced broadband infrastructure. The equipment will be provided by Nokia Siemens Networks, a global leader in TD-LTE and other wireless technologies.
The new broadband product will be available as part of a bundle with SKY TV or on its own as an individual service. SKY expects to extend the offering to other cities in Brazil where it holds licenses to operate data communication services (DCS) in 2012. DIRECTV is also exploring opportunities to offer wireless broadband services in other parts of Latin America.
“With the launch of this new service, we continue to maintain SKY’s position as the region’s leader in technological innovation and service,” said Bruce Churchill, president of DIRECTV Latin America. “By offering fast, high-quality broadband service at an affordable price, we are opening up new growth opportunities in Brazil and throughout the region. We’re excited to launch this new product that will complement and enhance our industry-leading video experience.”
The modem will be provided free of charge and is simple and easy to install. Laptops and other devices such as iPads and smart phones can be wirelessly connected via WiFi.
