EdgeCast Joins OpenDNS, Google, and others to Enhance Global DNS
Open standards-based initiative dramatically improves location awareness for domain name lookups
SANTA MONICA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- EdgeCast Networks, the world’s fastest and most reliable content delivery network (CDN), today announced a joint initiative with OpenDNS and Google – and also with several other CDNs – to speed up the Internet by improving the handling of DNS (domain name system) requests.
DNS is a critical component of Internet architecture, serving as a distributed “phone book” for mapping human-friendly domain names to computer-friendly IP addresses.
Distance between a content server and an end user has a significant impact on performance, so it is generally ideal for content to be delivered by the server closest to them.
However, delivery networks get little visibility into an end user’s geographic location at the time of an initial DNS lookup and are often forced to guess based on the location of that user’s ISP. This can be very problematic and result in poor performance because ISPs often generate DNS requests from servers that are thousands of miles away from the actual end user.
The enhancements being announced today address this problem by embedding a portion of the end user’s IP address into the initial DNS request. This enables delivery networks to much more accurately assess the end user location and to direct them to the content server that will perform best for them.
“Improving internet performance is at the core of the EdgeCast mission,” said Alex Kazerani, chairman and CEO of EdgeCast Networks. “Incorporating these enhanced DNS standards is another step toward fulfilling our goal of making the web faster for everyone.”
The DNS enhancements are live across the EdgeCast network effective immediately. These changes also bring improved capacity, performance, and security capabilities that the company plans to leverage across its product base in the coming months.
