Experience the RVU Remote User Interface Client-Server Solution Throughout IBC2012

The RVU Alliance today announced several demonstrations of the RVU Remote User Interface (RUI) solution at the International Broadcasting Convention being held Sept. 7-11 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

RVU Alliance members Broadcom, DIRECTV, Entropic Communications, Pace and Samsung will demonstrate new products compliant with the RVU standard at this year’s show. The DIRECTV Home Media Center, based on RVU protocol, has also been shortlisted as a finalist for the IBC Content Delivery Innovation Awards to be held on Sunday, Sept. 9. An example installation of this IBC-honored solution, including a DIRECTV RVU server, a Samsung SmartTV with embedded RVU client functionality, and the newly launched DIRECTV C31 RVU client, will be on display at the DLNA stand in the Connected Hall, Stand 411.

“We are thrilled at the number of demonstrations of deployed solutions at IBC this year,” said Henry Derovanessian, president of the RVU Alliance and senior vice president at DIRECTV. “We expect to see several million RVU client and server devices deployed next year from a number of OEMs. With the roadmap finalized for the next generation of the protocol, RVU clearly is the leading RUI solution supported by broadcast operators and OEMs alike.”

The RVU Protocol Specification describes a RUI standard which allows a single server in the home to interface to multiple client devices simultaneously, and provide both premium TV content and a consistent User Interface to every connected client. Connected clients, including devices such as Smart TVs, Blu Ray disc players and OTT platforms, eliminate the need for a separate set-top box.

RVU is an open standard built on the DLNA standard, and was incorporated into the DLNA Interoperability Guidelines in early 2012. Clients are certified using a full suite of development tools, test procedures and a fully independent certification process run by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory.

Products supporting RVU started deployment in late 2011 with solutions from DIRECTV and Samsung. New servers and clients will be deploying throughout the next 12 months. The next generation of the RVU specification, targeted for release by the end of 2012, will again leverage existing standards to take greater advantage of the capabilities of newer Smart TVs and networked devices.

RVU demonstrations will be available at the following IBC2012 locations: Broadcom (Hall 2, 2.C39), DLNA (Connected Hall, Stand 411), Entropic (Hall 5, stand C21), Pace (Hall 1, Stand B19) and Samsung (Hall 1, Stand D35). Please contact the individual companies to arrange a demonstration.

RVU is a client/server-based technology that allows the television viewer to experience a consistent, pixel accurate server-generated user interface on various consumer electronics devices. The RVU specification uses widely implemented UPnP and DLNA technologies to enable a gateway device such as an advanced set-top box to work with non-proprietary client devices such as connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and set-top boxes.
