Strong GPON revenue growth in the fourth quarter, according to Dell'Oro Group
Other Wireline Access Segments End the Year on a Slow Note
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – March 18, 2013 –
According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, fourth quarter Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) shipments were the bright spot in an overall lackluster quarter for Access gear (Cable + Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) + Passive Optical Network (PON)). While combined revenue for both Access infrastructure and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) was three percent lower sequentially, revenue for the GPON segment grew 10 percent sequentially and 28 percent over the year-ago period.
"It was a strong year in 2012 for equipment enabling higher bandwidth Internet service including GPON, VDSL, and DOCSIS 3.0 Cable CPE, but the fourth quarter was weak for most Access segments," said Steve Nozik, Principal Analyst of Access research at Dell'Oro Group. "The exception was GPON, which had robust revenue growth predominately driven by China, where service providers continue their massive fiber build-outs. We expect growth for most segments to resume in 2013 after the fourth quarter lull," Nozik added.
The report shows that in the fourth quarter, not surprisingly, the top three vendors were the largest suppliers to China and included Huawei, ZTE, and Alcatel-Lucent. With shipments to China excluded, the top three vendors were Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and Calix.
