Largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer achieves explosive growth over past two decades

MARION, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Cellular Connection (TCC), the largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer in the United States, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The company, which started with a single store in Marion, Ind., on Oct. 20, 1991, now has more than 600 locations across 26 states.

In Q3 2011 alone, TCC opened eight new stores, added 24 new employees and tapped into two new markets—Arkansas and Tennessee.

“The cellular industry and the small dish satellite industry were newly developing when The Cellular Connection first opened its doors,” said Phyllis Moorehead, co-founder of The Cellular Connection. “Before turning over the reins to our son Scott, my husband Steve Moorehead, the company’s co-founder and brilliant leader, had years of business experience and was able to anticipate how these business models would develop. Without his insight, the company absolutely would not be what it is today.”

TCC’s anniversary falls on the heels of it landing on the Inc. 500|5000—an annual ranking of the nation's fastest-growing private companies—for the second consecutive year. A timeline highlights the company’s major milestones over the past two decades:

  • October 20, 1991: Moorehead Communications’ cellular division, The Cellular Connection, is formed with its first location in Marion
  • 1996: TCC has 20 stores and 90 employees; Echostar launches; company becomes first retailer in Indiana to sell DISH Network
  • 2001: TCC has 86 stores and 343 employees; Interconnect Division is sold; company acquires Beeper Depot
  • 2002: Dealer department is established
  • 2003: TCC has 95 stores and 379 employees; acquires Schuld Communications and Advanced Wireless
  • 2005: TCC has 110 stores and 408 employees; acquires CTC Cellular and Owens Communications
  • 2008: TCC has 190 stores and 774 employees; acquires RAM TelCom, Wireless Network and PCS Wireless
  • 2010: TCC announces strategic partnership with hhgregg to open Verizon Wireless kiosks in every store
  • October 2011: TCC is the largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer in the U.S. with more than 600 locations across 26 states and more than 1,200 employees; company is one of the leading DISH Network dealers in the nation

“It is truly an amazing feeling to see all that we have accomplished throughout the past 20 years,” said Scott Moorehead, president and CEO of The Cellular Connection. “Every member of our team plays an integral role in our success. The most exciting part is we’ve only just begun—and I’m enthusiastic about the road ahead.”

TCC’s long-standing relationship with Verizon Wireless coupled with its buying power allows the company to make its services more accessible to customers while offering unparalleled customer service and competitive pricing. The company sets itself apart from the many other cell phone retailers today by offering superior customer service. At big box stores, customers are just the next person in line. At every TCC location, customers get personalized, one-on-one attention.
