Commission Launches Online Privacy and Security Consumer Webpages

Washington, D.C. - FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is scheduled to participate in an online privacy and security public awareness event organized by non-profit group Common Sense Media, at the National Press Club on October 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Other participants include Common Sense Media CEO, James Steyer; FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz; and Anthony W. Miller, Deputy Secretary of Education. At the event, the Chairman will launch the FCC online privacy and security webpages, which are part of the FCC's effort to educate consumers during October, which is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Chairman Genachowski said, "When people fear that new technologies put their privacy at risk, they are less likely to use those technologies. To fulfill the promise of broadband for our children, parents need to feel confident that their children are safe online and that their personal information is protected."

The FCC new online privacy and security webpages can be accessed at: http://fcc.gov/consumers.

The webpages provide useful and timely information for consumers and small businesses regarding online safety. During the month of October, the FCC will roll-out a video on wi-fi security narrated by Yul Kwon, winner of the television show Survivor, as well as consumer guides sheets, screencasts and blog postings addressing several topics, including:

  • Protecting Children in the Digital Age
  • Securing Wireless Networks
  • Safe Internet Navigation and Transactions
  • Tips for Infected Computers or Networks
  • Best Practices for Small Business Cybersecurity
  • Tips for Using the Internet Abroad

Important consumer information will be provided on the FCC's new online privacy and security webpage, http://fcc.gov/consumers, in addition to links to other sources of information regarding online security and privacy. Consumers are urged to visit regularly to view updates.
