NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Fiber networks technology specialist, i3 Group, has appointed Mike Parker to the role of Director of Mobile Operator Strategy.

Mike has been with i3 Group for a year and moves to the newly-created position from his role as Group Technical Innovations Director. Prior to joining i3 Group, he was Technical Director of an operating division of Siae Microelettronica, one of the leading microwave radio manufacturers and suppliers to the global mobile telephone industry.

i3 has created the Mobile Operator Strategy role to support the increasing requirement from mobile operators for Fiber to the Mast (FTTM) technology to manage the data requirements of the current 3G and forthcoming 4G LTE/WiMAX networks.

Based at the company’s headquarters, Mike has a global remit to apply i3 Group’s technology to the mobile arena.

i3 Group is best known for its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) technology that delivers high speed internet connections through existing conduits such as sewers, drains and clean water pipes. The suite of technologies, which falls under the company’s Hydrospeed brand, reduces installation costs by as much as 70 per cent by threading fiber optic cable through existing conduits or using ‘micro trenching’ which minimizes installation time, cost and disruption.

Mike Parker says: “By applying our technology to the mobile phone sector, we can take fiber to masts quickly and cost-effectively, enabling mobile operators to use fiber for data backhaul to cell sites.

“Our Hydrospeed technology will provide mobile operators with a wholly-owned infrastructure with up to 90 per cent reduction in fiber deployment timescales and up to 70 per cent reduction in deployment costs.

“If it is deployed as wholly owned, operators also get a dark fiber network which has quite literally unlimited data capacity. It’s as future-proof as you can get.”

The technology is expected to be welcomed by mobile operators who are facing the ‘double whammy’ of flat-lining ARPUs and spiralling backhaul costs whilst being under pressure to improve network performance.
