Infonetics Research: Survey confirms carriers want to integrate IPoDWDM and OTN optics into routers

Campbell, CALIFORNIA, July 28, 2011-Market research firm Infonetics Research today released excerpts from its new OTN and IPoDWDM on Routers: Global Service Provider Survey.

ANALYST NOTE
"In a similar survey last year, we discovered that a lot of carriers do indeed want IP over DWDM and OTN (optical transport network) integrated into their routers to save money. This year we drilled deeper to find out where in the network carriers want to use optics, at what speeds, whether they'd use OTN switching or not, etc., and discovered that 83% of them are either already using IPoDWDM on routers or plan to for access, metro, backbone and/or data center connections. Certainly they don't want optics everywhere or on every router, but it's clear that most want to use IPoDWDM and OTN selectively to help them drive down costs," notes Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research.

SELECT SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS
.       A majority of carriers plan to deploy IPoDWDM on metro routers and backbone routers, the most heavily-trafficked routers
.       Most service providers plan to adopt OTN to carry 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GE) in ODU4 containers, and in most cases the router will aggregate traffic from ten 10GE signals
.       Although the same numbers (83%) of operators plan use of IPoDWDM and OTN on routers this year compared to last year, fewer now plan to deploy by 2012, indicating a delay in deployment plans for some

ABOUT THE SURVEY
For its 16-page OTN and IPoDWDM on Routers: Global Service Provider Survey, Infonetics interviewed router purchase decision-makers at 24 incumbent carriers, competitive operators, mobile operators, and cable operators in North America, Asia Pacific, and EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa). The service providers, which together represent a significant 1/3 of both global telecom capex and revenue, divulged their plans for using optics on routers, including if and when they plan to deploy OTN and IPoDWDM, for which connections (access, metro, backbone, data center) and on what percent of their routers, if and when they expect to use OTN switching, and which OTN interfaces they plan to use and by when: channelized ODU flex, channelized ODU 0 (1.25G payload), ODU 1 or 2 (2.5G and 10G payloads), and ODU 3 or 4 (40G and 100G payloads).
