Company’s Comcerto® Processors Power Video-over-Wireless (VoW), Video Transcoding, Home Automation, Smart Metering and DLNA®-Based Applications in Next Generation Home Gateways

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced that it is demonstrating a series of video and real-time data applications for broadband service providers at the 2011 Broadband World Forum in Paris, France from September 27-29, 2011. Mindspeed will showcase dynamic, value-added services that can be deployed via the new generation of broadband home routers (BHRs) and media gateways powered by its Comcerto 1000 embedded packet processors.

“It is no longer sufficient for broadband service providers to differentiate based on speed and price,” said Naser Adas, vice president and general manager, customer premises equipment (CPE) and wireless, at Mindspeed. “With the surge in smart home electronics, tablets and advanced high-definition (HD) video monitors, our Comcerto 1000 system-on-chip (SoC) provides an ideal platform for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to deliver residential gateway devices for broadband operators, which enable leading-edge video and visual content services throughout the connected home.”

Key Mindspeed Demonstrations at Broadband World Forum Include:

  • Remote User Interface for Advanced Home Gateways: Mindspeed will demonstrate a home gateway running the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-based RVU™ client/server remote user interface, which delivers a consistent experience to consumers watching live or recorded video programming on any consumer electronics (CE) devices in any room. The demonstration features Mindspeed’s Comcerto 1000 processor running JetHead Development’s embedded RVU server framework software components on an RVU server.
  • Smart Metering: Mindspeed’s Comcerto 1000 SoC processor will be shown running Rockethome GmbH’s unique User Engagement Platform, which enables the interpretation, visualization and control of smart home and smart metering applications. This live demo will show how users can link home appliances and multimedia equipment both inside the home and over the Internet, and then control and automate functions, while measuring usage and efficiency in a single, holistic application.
  • Embedded Video-over-Wireless: Leading-edge Qualcomm-Atheros Wi-Fi technology is now integrated with Mindspeed’s Comcerto 1000 processors, and the combined solution takes a significant step forward in processing Voice- and Video-over-IP media streams in next-generation media gateways for the connected home.
  • Home Automation: Mindspeed will demonstrate its Comcerto hardware and software integrated with Wind River’s Platform for Gateway (PFG) in a turnkey, high-performance broadband home router and intelligent service-enabling platform. The platform includes bundled OSGi run-time software for a wide variety of home automation and remote-management capabilities; including software and firmware lifecycle management, provisioning, remote configuration and remote monitoring that help reduce operating costs of broadband value-added service delivery.

Mindspeed’s Comcerto 1000 SoCs combine two ARM11™ processors, acceleration engines, popular interfaces, and production-grade software including a wide range of codecs supporting carrier-class VoIP. They are designed to deliver superior packet handling, robust quality of service (QoS) and industry-leading power efficiency for voice, HD-grade video and data applications, including value-added, remotely-managed carrier services. Comcerto processors also feature a unique, programmable software architecture that enables manufacturers to offer multiple system solutions ranging from fiber-to-the-home (FTTH)-based triple-play gateways to 3G/4G routers and home automation platforms.

Representatives from Mindspeed’s high-performance analog (HPA) business unit will also be on hand to show its family of highly integrated laser drivers that enable optical transceiver and optical network terminal (ONT) vendors to significantly reduce their overall system costs. The devices can be implemented in traditional module formats or with a bi-directional optical sub-assembly (BOSA) that can be mounted directly onto the ONT board to reduce bill-of-material (BOM) costs.

Mindspeed will be hosting private meetings and demonstrations for service providers, customers, press and analysts throughout the Broadband World Forum in meeting room MR5 at the CNIT La Defense in Paris, France.
