New Context-Aware Video Optimization Solution Designed to Optimize Networks in Real-Time to Reduce Network Costs, Increase Network Efficiency, and Enhance the User Experience

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:OPWV), a global software innovator delivering context-aware mediation and messaging solutions, today announced the availability of a new version of its intelligent, content and context aware media optimization solution that works to automatically trigger optimization when the network reaches pre-determined thresholds. Media Optimizer also enables the ability to intelligently analyze and implement network optimization based on real time network conditions. This in-network intelligence capability is expected to significantly lower operator’s total cost of ownership (TCO) by reducing transmission requirements up to 40% when required by network conditions and also improve the mobile video viewing experience for subscribers, leading to higher average revenue per user (ARPU).

The latest version of Media Optimizer provides capability to mobile network operators to pre-determine automated actions to be taken as soon as the mobile network reaches certain thresholds. These actions are intelligently enabled based on real time network conditions, working to ensure that the video viewing experience of the subscribers is maintained even during times of peak network usage. Media Optimizer also utilizes HTTP-AS (Adaptive Streaming), a transport protocol that is gaining wide popularity with content providers like Netflix and Hulu. Openwave Media Optimizer is part of Openwave’s Traffic Mediation solution and can be delivered pre-integrated with Openwave® Smart Policy.

“Yankee Group has forecasted the growth for mobile video traffic to increase exponentially in the future, especially as usage of high-end mobile devices like smartphones ramps up with the expectation that the 600+ million smartphones in use in 2010 will more than double in 2014 to over 1.4 billion,” said Terry Cudmore, analyst, Yankee Group. “The ability for operators to optimize video traffic without impacting the overall user experience lies in the use of optimization techniquest that are not only network-aware but also content and quality-aware.”

“Mobile video is growing rapidly in popularity and many operators are bracing themselves for the exponential growth in mobile data traffic that is expected in the coming years,” said John Giere, senior vice president of products and marketing at Openwave. “While 4G upgrades are expected to absorb some of this data demand, dynamic in-network software solutions will play an essential role in enabling greater network efficiencies for mobile network operators. Openwave Media Optimizer helps lower TCO while providing operators with advanced tools such as built-in analytics, context- and content-aware compression and support for advanced smartphone devices such as iPhone and Android for a superior optimized video solution.”

Key benefits of Openwave Media Optimizer include:

  • Congestion and Content Aware Optimization: The Openwave media optimization solution provides an intelligent capability to mobile network operators to automatically trigger optimization as and when the network reaches pre-determined thresholds. In addition, Media Optimizer can determine the content type (like news vs. sports action) and accordingly apply intelligent optimization actions that will maintain the video viewing experience of the subscribers lowering customer churn for operators.
  • Dynamic Updates: Video over the internet brings unique challenges and opportunities for the mobile operators. One of the challenges faced is that the source and type of content can change with little or no notice to the network providers. Openwave provides the capability for all its deployments to quickly react to these changes by pushing the required updates via the cloud thus helping operators to minimize potential network disruption challenges.
  • Adaptive Streaming: As the acceptance of the HTTP-AS grows with key video content providers, Openwave has taken a strong position in having a media and technology ready solution available for deployment now.

Openwave recently announced the findings of video usage for a tier one European operator in their Mobile Insights report issued this week. To read the Mobile Insights report, please visit (Openwave.com).
