Research and Markets: Jordan Telecommunications Report Q1 2012

The Jordanian market has caught up with neighbouring peers over the past year or so, with two 3G launches providing mobile broadband and mobile data services to subscribers. Zain Jordan followed Orange, the mobile brand of Jordan Telecom, in offering 3G services and both operators have shown strong growth in subscriptions. The availability of smartphones and 3G-ready devices at the time of launch has been an important factor in pushing growth up.

Third-ranked Umniah plans to launch its 3G network in early 2012, but BMI believes the company will be coming to the market a little too late to capture the potential growth from early adopters. Nevertheless, we expect mobile subscribers in Jordan to begin upgrading their mobiles to 3G platforms at a fast rate over the early part of our five-year forecast. There will be some impact on overall market subscriptions, but this will be limited. Mobile broadband will provide the bulk of mobile subscriber growth, as access to dedicated mobile broadband services becomes a competitor to fixed broadband provision in the country.

All BMI's forecasts have been extended to 2016, with market trends showing that broadband is the area of fastest growth in the market, while the fixed-line market is forecast to continue declining, albeit at a slower pace than previously seen. Incumbent Jordan Telecom, part owned by France Telecom, reported strong growth in its revenue generating units in Q311, which BMI believes will have been principally driven by mobile broadband and fixed broadband users.
