Research and Markets: United States Telecommunications Report Q2 2011 - Operators Switch their Focus to Providing Higher V
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/8450bd/united_states_tele) has announced the addition of the "United States Telecommunications Report Q2 2011" report to their offering.
Business Monitor International's United States Telecommunications Report provides industry professionals and strategists, corporate analysts, telecommunication associations, government departments and regulatory bodies with independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on United States's telecommunications industry.
BMI's forecasts have been slightly adjusted in light of the latest figures released from telecoms operators, covering Q410. Mobile phone subscriptions were slightly below the report expectations, although not by a significant margin. BMI believes mobile subscribers will grow at a rather subdued pace as the market nears 100% penetration and operators switch their focus on providing higher-value services rather than simply gaining more customers.
Nevertheless, Q410 was a good quarter for AT&T's subscriptions, which as expected finally overtook Verizon as the largest mobile operator, adding 2.78mn people during the quarter, bringing its total to 95.54mn, compared to Verizon's 94.14mn. The closely fought battle between the two companies may become decidedly one-sided because in March 2011 AT&T dropped a bombshell announcement: that it agreed to buy the US' fourth largest operator, T-Mobile USA, in a deal estimated to be worth US$39bn. The deal still needs to be approved by regulators and anti-trust authorities, but if it goes through, the combined customer base would put AT&T out of Verizon's reach for the foreseeable future.
The fixed line forecasts have been revised downward, as the decline in lines in service has moved at a quicker pace than expected. There were an estimated 111.12mn fixed lines in service at the end of 2010 and BMI now believes this number will drop by nearly 10mn by the end of the forecast period, in 2015. Internet figures have fallen broadly in line with the report's views, and the forecasts remain unchanged for this quarter. Broadband, already growing strongly, is likely to be given a significant boost by the increasing availability of mobile broadband and the roll-out of fourth-generation (4G) LTE networks by a variety of companies, including nationwide operators.
