STM® Group Wins SatCom Stars Product Innovation Award

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- STM Group, Inc., a provider of satellite and cellular network access products, has been honored with a technology innovation award for its SuperPico^® GSM base station. The award was presented at the annual SatCom Africa 2010 conference last week in Johannesburg, recognizing SuperPico as the most innovative communications technology bringing cost-effective cellular communications within reach for rural and remote areas of Africa and elsewhere.

The SuperPico system, which is designed for very lower power consumption, provides an IP-based Radio Access Network that can interoperate with existing or a new IP core network deployed by mobile operators. The connection to the core can use STM's integrated SatLink modem which is optimized for operation within SuperPico for lowest CAPEX and OPEX in a small and ruggedized outdoor unit. The product is designed for use with solar power and minimal civil works, allowing the installation of the entire base station and solar system on a single pole.

The awarded winning SuperPico system uses local routing and single-hop IP connectivity, within and between villages, and to a cellular operator’s core infrastructure. With exceptionally low power consumption and minimal capital expenditure and operating cost, it is ideal for rural deployments where all-solar installations are preferred. Total cost of ownership for SuperPico BTS sites can be as low as 35% of traditional BTS installations.

SuperPico employs advanced software designed radio, along with superior RF technology and is fully compliant with GSM standards and available in all four frequency bands.
