Who: RCN
Vitals: This Herndon, Va., company started as a cable TV over-builder and had much of its initial success in landing multi-dwelling unit contracts. It now has 416,000 customers and recently acquired Neon Communications it boost its business market presence.
Why you should care: An earnings charge related to the Neon acquisition forced RCN to a fourth-quarter 2007 net loss, but sales were up 11.5% and the company said in an outlook for 2008 that the RCN Metro division that now includes Neon will account for 23% to 24% of company revenue this year.
