Roseville, Calif.-based broadband service provider SureWest Communications has aggressively deployed fiber-to-the-premises throughout the Sacramento area, but at the same time ensured itself a better service fulfillment future by automating the entire process from service ordering through service delivery. That made service fulfillment a less hands-on task so that SureWest could direct its hands (or technicians' hands) to learning the new skills needed to manage its state-of-the-art IP FTTP networks.
SureWest's experience may show how telcos need to make room for both process automation and hands-on engineering staffs who are always learning new skills.
