Are traditional telcos quick enough and nimble enough to succeed in the content delivery network market? StreamingMedia.com's Dan Rayburn (He's also principal CDN analyst at Frost & Sullivan) explores that question and more in a report looking at the panel Rayburn moderated at last week's Content Delivery Summit, a panel stocked with carrier speakers from Deutsche Telekom, Level 3 Communications, Tata Communications and Global Crossing. Rayburn learned that DT eventually may transition from reselling CDN services to running them as an in-house offering, an approach which several other carriers have felt they needed to take.
Carrier activity continues to help re-shape a CDN market that once was dominated by Akamai Technologies. Though Akamai remains the market leader, carriers and other carrier-CDN partnerships may pose a challenge--if in fact carriers can prove that CDN services are a worthwhile business for them.
