Michelle Hymson, Assistant Vice President for Wholesale Sales, FairPoint Communications (Nasdaq: FRP), is in an interesting position as the service provider sets a path of new growth in wholesale services.

Hymson has plenty of experience to draw from to lead the wholesale team. Before joining FairPoint in 2007, Michelle held a variety of sales and leadership positions in leading telecommunications companies, including Level 3 (NYSE: LVLT), TelCove (which was later purchased by Level 3), and AT&T (NYSE: T).

One of the key initiatives that Hymson has championed in the telco's wholesale division is, not surprisingly, wireless backhaul, particularly Ethernet-based Fiber to the Tower (FTTT) services.

Already serving 3G wireless operators on more than 1,600 towers in its Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont markets, FairPoint announced last April that it would provide Ethernet-over-fiber service to over half of the towers in its initial network expansion to support the region's wireless operator's 4G wireless rollouts.

As of the end of 2011, FairPoint expanded fiber facilities to over 700 of its sites in northern New England.

Supporting the wireless backhaul initiative is FairPoint's VantagePoint IP/MPLS-based core network. Complete with 400 Gbps of capacity based on Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) routers, the network can serve the dual purpose of not only wireless backhaul, but also other business and consumer broadband service initiatives.  

Along with wireless backhaul, Hymson and the FairPoint Wholesale team continues to offer a suite of three main services: local services (voice, Internet and resale), access (Ethernet, SONET and special access), and interconnection (SS7 and trunking E-911).

Ethernet, of course, is a key service in the wholesale portfolio. Last October, the service provider began extending its E-Line service suite, including Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL), to wholesale customers in New England.  

With much of its financial and operational troubles behind them, FairPoint Wholesale is poised to become another source for local wireline service providers and wireless operators in New England and other territories it serves.
