Adtran eyes ONT launches, stimulus-related activity

Tools

Network equipment vendor Adtran, already listed by at least one industry analyst as a company that is likely to benefit from broadband stimulus funds targeted at under-served markets, said it will launch three new lines of optical network terminal units next month as part of its broadband fiber-to-the-premises architecture strategy.

Elements of Adtran's broadband family already are accepted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service program, which will have responsibility for awarding some broadband stimulus grants. Last week, Lawrence Harris, an analyst at CL King & Associates said in a research note that Adtran carrier customers such as CenturyTel, Embarq (the latter currently in the process of being bought by CenturyTel) and Qwest Communications could be in line for rural broadband stimulus grants.

The new ONTs will address residential, business and cell site applications. In they future, they also will support Radio Frequency (RF) video, Radio Frequency over Glass (RFoG), and Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HPNA) technologies.
