Alcatel-Lucent delves into DPI

Tools

It sounds like Alcatel-Lucent is readying a major push into deep packet inspection, a technology which is key to offering managed security services that include intense traffic monitoring. DPI also has been somewhat controversial because it can be used to identify peer-to-peer traffic on a network, which in turn could help carriers impose delays on P2P traffic (as Comcast did) as they look to manage network quality for other users.

Alca-Lu's move could be perfectly timed. As network services become more complex with the addition of content and various bundles, carriers are looking for better ways to activate, bill and manage those services and overall network quality.
