Alcatel-Lucent opens technology center in Brazil

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) sees a good opportunity to get a larger piece of Brazil's telecom market, and has opened up a technology center in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Set to help Brazil-based service providers prepare for the new bandwidth demands that will come with the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics, Alcatel-Lucent's center will highlight its wireline and wireless technologies, including 4G LTE, video applications, cloud and location-based services.

Occupying about 15,400 square feet in its existing Sao Paulo location, the center will host visitors from Brazil and other Latin American countries.

The timing of Alcatel-Lucent's technology showcase not only jibes well with the upcoming World Cup and Olympics, but also at a time when broadband services, in particular, rose 51 percent in 2010 alone. Such growth has prompted the nation's largest telecom providers such as Telefonica (NYSE: TEF) and GVT to both increase their wireline and wireless network investments in Brazil.
