Alcatel-Lucent reaches 10M VDSL2 vectored line shipments

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) has reached a milestone of 10 million VDSL2 vectored line shipments, a feat it has reached through gaining contracts with a number of Asia-Pacific, European and Latin American customers.

One of those customers is Proximus (formerly Belgacom). During a ceremony in Brussels, Proximus, which was one of the first service providers to deploy a nationwide VDSL2 vectoring network, received a golden line card from Alcatel-Lucent in celebration of the first year of operating a VDSL2 vectoring network.

The vendor continues to make progress in what is still a relatively nascent market segment.

To date, Alcatel-Lucent claims 27 VDSL2 vectoring customers, including Israel's Bezeq, KPN in the Netherlands, Telecom Argentina, Telecom Italia, TE Data in Egypt and NBN Co. in Australia. In addition, the vendor said it is conducting 65 trials with a number of other service providers.

A key benefit of VDSL2 vectoring is that it allows service providers theoretically to deploy up to 100 Mbps over their existing copper-based networks, allowing them to meet the growing demands for higher speed connections while complementing other fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network deployments.

"We're seeing huge growth for VDSL2 vectoring alongside our fiber-to-the-home solutions as more and more operators realize they need both copper and fiber technologies to meet their customers' ultra-broadband demands," said Federico Guillén, president of Alcatel-Lucent's Fixed Access Business Line, in a release.
