Allstream lights up 100G network with Ciena

Allstream, the business arm of MTS Allstream (Toronto: MBT.TO), is responding to its customers' needs for higher bandwidth by implementing 100G capabilities on its national network.

To reach the 100G goal, Allstream is deploying Ciena's (Nasdaq: CIEN) 6500 Packet-Optical Platform equipped with WaveLogic coherent optical processors.

Like other service providers that have upgraded their own respective networks with 100G, Allstream's was done without any major capex investments.

With this new bandwidth capability in place, the service provider can better respond to the high capacity requirements seen in data centers, financial houses and government agencies. The new network bandwidth falls in line with Allstream's aggressive move to fan out its on-net fiber connections into area buildings and augmenting its IP-based service set.

During Q3 2011, the service provider added 102 buildings to its IP-based fiber network in Q3 2011, ending the quarter with 2,313 total buildings as of the end of September. Converged IP revenues rose 9.8 percent to CAD 59.4 million (USD 58.3 million), a figure that makes up almost 30 percent of Allstream's total revenue mix.
