Alpheus Communications sees uptick in wholesale service sales, plots growth

Alpheus Communications, a Texas-based regional service provider that was purchased by private equity firm The Gores Group last September, is seeing ongoing growth in wholesale service sales as the bandwidth needs of its carriers' end customers continues to rise.

Leveraging a mix of copper, fiber and Ethernet-based services, Alpheus has become a viable alternative wholesale provider to wireline and wireless operators in the Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Houston (aka DASH) markets.

Over its copper and fiber network infrastructure, the service provider can offer an entire suite of products, including Ethernet services, Internet, dark fiber and managed wavelength services at speeds that can scale from DS-1 to OC-192. In particular, the service provider has seen its greatest demand from wireless operators expanding their 4G/LTE buildouts that are increasingly migrating from SONET-based services to Ethernet. It's also seeing demand from wireline operators that need Ethernet-based connectivity between markets, PoPs and end users who are demanding higher levels of bandwidth.

While Alpheus has found strong growth in Texas, the service provider's ambitions aren't relegated to that state alone.

Scott Widham, CEO of Alpheus, told FierceTelecom during the spring COMPTEL PLUS show that he's anxious to expand the service provider through acquisitions.

"We want to use Alpheus as a platform for growth," he said. "We'd like to bolt other things onto the company such as data center companies, CLECs and wireless backhaul providers."

Widham, CEO of the former Broadwing Communications--now Level 3 (NYSE: LVLT)--certainly has the experience to make deals. Before Broadwing, he was the CEO of Capital Cable, an MSO that owned cable systems across the United States and in Latin America, which was later sold to Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR). His experience combined with Gores' financial backing will help make those efforts a reality.

In addition to expanding through acquisitions, the service provider plans to add more elements to its product portfolio, including managed and cloud-based services featuring storage, disaster recovery and Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) protection services.
