Alpheus extends cloud footprint via CyrusOne's data centers

Alpheus, a growing Texas-based competitive telecom provider, has established a number of connections in CyrusOne's (Nasdaq: CONE) data centers in the state as a way to expand its cloud service reach.

As a reciprocal relationship, Alpheus will also offer its fiber network services at CyrusOne's data centers, including two in Houston and one in Dallas. By providing additional data center diversity on its network, Alpheus will enhance its infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering for businesses looking to implement their cloud strategy.

"We have been very aggressive, and will continue to be making investments to expand our network to various data," said Scott Widham, CEO of Alpheus Communications, in an interview with FierceTelecom. "It's an industry trend that's driving our expansion strategy because both of our wholesale and enterprise customers are deploying cloud-based solutions that require high performance, high bandwidth connectivity to these data centers."

Having already built out 6 data centers that it owns and operates, Alpheus knows the business well, but the partnerships help get its network connected with other providers in the area.

"We're pretty familiar with the data center business, but we think it's a great strategy for us to partner and build to as many data centers as we can," Widham said.

Providing fiber-based connectivity to CyrusOne is just one of several ways it could work with the data center provider. The CLEC could potentially sell its broader suite of services such as Ethernet and IP/MPLS services to customers that reside in either Cyrus One or another data center provider's center.

The expansion of its data center footprint complements its MPLS IP VPN and high-bandwidth fiber services, two methods that its customers already use for their cloud environments. Customers also have the option to use its Ethernet LAN (E-LAN) Layer 2 managed network service to connect all of their data and voice services.

"Beyond just helping CyrusOne as more customers come into their data center they will have various options including the ILEC, Level 3 (NYSE: LVLT), tw telecom (Nasdaq: TWTC), XO Communications, and we're right there in the mix," Widham said. "It just gets down to price or reliability, which is why getting to know the operator of the data center makes a lot of difference."
