AMS-IX hooks Zayo's dark fiber into its New York-area data centers

The Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX) has taken another step forward with its ongoing expansion into the U.S. colocation market by selecting Zayo to provide dark fiber to connect its data centers in the New York area where it runs its Internet peering platform.

Building on its Internet Exchange model in Europe, the U.S. exchange platform allows multiple Internet service providers, content owners, cloud providers and other Internet-related companies to interconnect via an open peering fabric.

Under the terms of the agreement, Zayo will provide dark fiber and Layer 2 connectivity for Internet Exchange customers using the Digital Realty data center in New York, DuPont Fabros Technology's NJ1 data center in New Jersey, as well as the Sabey Data Centers and the 325 Hudson interconnection facilities in New York.

By using Zayo's dark fiber facilities, AMS-IX New York will be able to have a direct flow of traffic between its major peering points of presence. This means it will have fewer network hops to support more efficient data transport.

Henk Steenman, chief technical officer at AMS-IX, said in a release that "the scalability of the dark fiber product enables Zayo to meet our needs as the exchange develops."

This new exchange is part of AMS-IX's global deployment of peering platforms. Outside of New York, AMS-IX plans to deploy distributed Internet Exchanges in the Chicago and Silicon Valley markets in the first half of 2014.
