AT&T, Ciena deliver network visibility solution to Itron

AT&T (NYSE: T) and Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), one of the telco's key optical networking vendor partners, are deploying a managed network monitoring service for energy vendor Itron.

Leveraging a combination of Ciena's Network Transformation Solutions (NTS) and AT&T's global managed services, the two companies said the joint solution will enable Itron to more effectively manage, monitor and control network performance in order to maintain availability and performance of business-critical applications.

A major part of this deployment is resource visibility. Itron will now have a view of all of its available network resources and a platform to allocate bandwidth based on business demands.

Ciena said its Application Assurance Managed Service (AAMS) will give Itron control over its network resources, helping the company's IT team to manage finite bandwidth and prioritize it to support key applications and communication services such as Unified Communications and back-office software.

AAMS draws on Ciena's OPn architecture approach for building programmable networks that scale and automatically respond to changing demands for high-bandwidth applications and services.

This customer win is meaningful for AT&T and Ciena in a couple ways. First, they can cite the joint deployment as a case study for other large multinational corporations that are seeking a similar solution. It also shows how service providers and vendors can leverage software solutions to solve complex problems that exist in large enterprises like Itron.
