AT&T deepens U-verse presence in California, names Greensboro as next 1 Gig stop

AT&T (NYSE: T) continues to step up its U-verse rollout, announcing that it has extended service to more customers in San Francisco and Sacramento while naming Greensboro, N.C., as the next stop on its 1 Gig fiber to the premises (FTTP) network journey.

In the San Francisco area, AT&T expanded U-verse services, including broadband, U-verse TV and U-verse voice, to nearly 10,400 customer locations in June. During this period, about 5,700 customer locations took place in San Francisco.

However, AT&T added that customer locations also were added in more than 12 other area towns and neighborhoods, including significant numbers in Berkeley, Richmond, San Rafael and Sebastopol.

Over in Sacramento, the service provider completed the expansion of U-verse to an additional 3,200 new customer locations in June.

Similar to the San Francisco area, AT&T said a large part of the local growth--about 2,100 customer locations--took place in Sacramento during June. It also extended U-verse to customer locations in another four area towns and neighborhoods, including significant numbers in Stockton and Lodi.

The service provider is also continuing to expand its FTTP plan, announcing the city of Greensboro as the next city it is targeting where it will offer its symmetric 1 Gig GigaPower service.

AT&T said that specific locations of availability and pricing for the Greensboro market will be announced at a later date.

In April, the service provider said it would consider bringing its GigaPower network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across 25 U.S. markets. Part of that announcement will target other potential Houston areas, including Galveston, Pasadena, Pearland and Spring as candidates for the service.

Outside of Greensboro, the service provider has announced plans to deliver the GigaPower network to Charlotte, Nashville, Raleigh-Durham and Winston-Salem. Earlier this week, the service provider announce that it would also bring GigaPower to Overland Park, Kan. and Houston.
