AT&T invests $1.35B in Alabama local network, extends U-verse to 36,000 new users

AT&T (NYSE: T) is giving its consumer and business users in Alabama access to more of its next-gen service set, investing more than $1.35 billion in its local networks between 2011 and 2013.

Driven by its Project VIP initiative, AT&T said that in 2013 it made 957 network upgrades in Alabama, including the addition of wired network capacity and new broadband connections.

On the consumer front, the telco expanded the reach of its U-verse Internet and services to more than 36,000 new customer locations. Having these expanded capabilities could give it a competitive weapon to battle local cable operators such as Bright House, which has a presence in markets such as Birmingham.

Likewise, it made progress with its fiber to the building program, connecting 1,664 business locations at 81 multi-tenant business buildings and business parks.

Outside of Alabama, AT&T recently announced similar network upgrade investments in California, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio.
