AT&T sees trouble re-filling outsourced jobs
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told an audience at San Antonio Chamber of Commerce luncheon this week that the company has managed to fill only 1,300 jobs out of 5,000 that it had pledged back in 2006 to bring back from India. Those jobs had been outsourced to India primarily by AT&T contractors. The problem is that AT&T can't seem to find enough educated and skilled workers for the jobs. It has apparently awakened AT&T and Stephenson to the ongoing problem of kids dropping out of school.
The high school drop-out rate is as high as 50% in some communities, Stephenson said. The company now wants to help fight that problem via the AT&T Foundation, its long-standing charitable organization. Labor unions and people who have high school educations, but are currently unemployed, may find AT&T's problem hard to believe, so it will be interesting to see the ripple effect of these comments (though Stephenson's comments have been circulating for a couple days already). Others may simply want to take note: Help wanted at AT&T.

at&t treats their managers like crap! there is so much red tape around everything. They don't empower anyone. Leadership is very greedy.

and they treat their managers like crap. obviously not executives but they treat 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level managers like a pimp treats his prostitutes.. the pimp is probably better. the executives are greedy as hell and don't care about employees or customer service. they only get away with offering lousy service because everyone offers lousy service. shame on you at&t as the "A" used to stand for "American".. you are not american.. the "A" should stand for the arsholes that you really are!!
AT&T is its own worst enemy in this regard. The required 6 month gap between contracts is ridiculous! This company has been downsizing since 1984 and continues to do so at the expense of customer service and the thousands of loyal employees who they have forced out. There is a more than ample number of ex-AT&T and Lucent Technologies people who could fill the jobs immediately. On some level, this policy of requiring 6 months between assignments is short-sighted at best and discriminatory toward the very people whose loyalty and hard work AT&T enjoyed over the years.
I work for this company and posting the jobs available to the current employees might be a start! If we knew about them we could submit on them. Cant fill them if you don't ask. By the way I am well educated and have been trying to transfer out of my current position for no less than 8 years. That is how long there have been no oportunities to show my ( or anyone else's) abilitites or knowledge
That is so hypocritical, AT&T looks to eliminate workers every quarter, as for contractors they are considered and treated as disposable resources over there, with no rights what so ever.
Who wants to treated that way?

AT&T is no longer hiring "permanent" employees (at least in my area) for technical jobs. They only take contractors, mostly former employees who had previously been laid off, or foreigners. And maybe a few token college hires here and there. When the 2 year contract limit is up, they are rarely hiring the workers for full-time jobs, but rather going back into the pool for more contractors.
Issues filling many of these contract positions are in part caused by their own HR rules. As many contract employees can attest once you have reached a specified period of time contracting with AT&T you must take 6 months off or become an employee. Therefore, if you are qualified to fill a position you are disqualified because you are in a not allowed at AT&T period. Many contractors just find another company without these types of rules.
