AT&T testing GPON, nearing deployment

Tools

AT&T is testing gigabit passive optical network technology and may be close to deploying GPON in its greenfield fiber network deployments, or at least is on track to do so sometime this year, according to a story in Light Reading that pins the time frame on unnamed sources. The carrier earlier had said it would begin deploying GPON gear from Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson this summer. Verizon Communications has been further ahead in deploying the architecture in both existing and greenfield environments, but AT&T's testing could be a sign that the telco is almost ready to move on large-scale GPON rollouts.
