Australia could be closer to naming NBN contractors

Tools

An article in Bloomberg today citing a report in the Australian Financial Review revealed that the Australian government may have put two contractors on its shortlist to build its National Broadband Network (NBN). While the report gave little details on who these contractors could be, the estimated price tag is about $469 million.

One thing that was revealed was that the Australian government could name the contractors sometime next week. However, neither reports in Bloomberg or the Australian Financial Review would reveal how they got wind of these potential deals.

The proposed NBN network has been a story of ambition and political battles between the government and Australia's incumbent service provider Telstra, which has been asked to break itself up.

The only reason why the Fed Gov would entertain the idea of the Backhaul Blackspots program is if the structural seperation of Telstra was to fail; and considering that the senate did not get to discuss the bill to perform the forceful seperation this may mean that there may be nothing happening to 2010.
Strangely there is a Federal Election in 2010 and the government will want to show that it's making good on it's 2007 election promise. Perhaps Mr. Conroy and Mr. Rudd are feeling the pressure over this issue.
