Australian government unveils regional fiber backbone plan

After it was revealed last month that it was close to naming its network construction partners, it looks like the Australian government is finally putting together the first piece of its National Broadband Network plan as it revealed it is building a 6,000 km regional fiber backbone.

Heading up this effort will be Nextgen Networks under the $229 million Regional Backbone Blackspots Program. Selected through a competitive bidding process, Nextgen is not only making a big investment in the fiber network project, but they will also be charged with building, operating and maintaining the network for five years after it is finished.
