Backhaul to drive $8.5B market for edge routers by 2019

Sales of edge routers used for mobile backhaul will outpace growth of routers used for other applications, helping to boost the service provider edge router market to $8.5 billion by 2019, according to Dell'Oro Group.

Investment is likely to be heaviest in China, where providers are building out LTE and have increasing backhaul requirements, while Europe will follow a slower but steady path, the research firm said in a release. "In some other geographies and countries, Service Providers will build out the aggregation and edge layers of the network to support consumers' insatiable appetite for IP traffic. We expect that some of these countries will even see a significant upgrade cycle in their existing LTE-based mobile backhaul infrastructure before 2019," said Alam Tamboli, senior analyst. Release
