BCE profit up, mobile unit makes acquisition

Bell Canada Enterprises reported first-quarter net income of $377 million, an increase of about 46 percent from its $258 million profit mark from the same quarter last year. Quarterly revenue was $4.34 billion, barely under last year's report of $4.36 billion. The company that owns Bell Canada and Bell Mobility also said that the latter is acquiring the 50 percent chunk of Virgin Mobile Canada that it doesn't already own. Among other news, Western Canada carrier Telus will resell satellite TV service from BCE.

The positive earnings report comes one quarter after BCE posted a $48 million net loss during an eventful period in which the firm saw its proposed buyout fall apart at the last minute.
