Belgacom ICS furthers Africa reach with Johannesburg point of presence

Belgacom International and Carrier Services (BICS) is moving to improve its interconnection capabilities in Africa by establishing a point of presence in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Located in local data center company Teraco, BICS said the PoP will improve interconnectivity, optimize transit times and decrease the latency for traffic into Africa by increasing the availability of BICS' MOSAIC suite of solutions to operators and Internet service providers (ISPs) within the region.

"Establishing the Johannesburg PoP in partnership with Teraco is an important step in increasing transit efficiency in Southern Africa," said Johan Wouters, BICS SVP Capacity Business Management, in a release.

This South Africa PoP is just one of several moves BICS has made to enhance its reach throughout the region.

In March, it established a PoP in Dubai with Equinix and introduced its East Africa Gateway in Djibouti in 2013. What's more, BICS enhanced its investment in the region by opening three new offices in Ghana, Kenya and South Africa last year.
