Birch adds 46 on-net buildings to fiber network in four major markets

Birch Communications continues to make progress with its aggressive fiber buildout strategy, extending its facilities into an additional 46 buildings in four major U.S. markets.

With this expansion completed in its Dallas, Houston, Denver and Los Angeles markets, the service provider now serves a total of 686 buildings nationwide, reaching more than 20,000 businesses with its suite of IP-based Ethernet and voice services.

Two of the largest fiber network expansions are in Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles.

Within the Dallas-Fort Worth market, Birch expanded its metro fiber network to an additional 17 buildings on a newly built, dedicated 209-mile dark fiber ring, a move that extends its service footprint to 150 buildings in the region.

Dallas-Fort Worth is a key market in Birch's organic growth strategy for two reasons: It's a major Internet and network exchange point and it is a dense metro area that consists of 10,000 business locations and 21 Fortune 500 corporate headquarters.

Over in Los Angeles, Birch is expanding its metro fiber network to light an additional 22 buildings. The service provider said that it will continue to "analyze and implement new market opportunities in Tier 1 and 2 markets in large, multi-tenant buildings and facilities in 2015."

"Birch is aggressively investing in expanding Metro-Fiber in several key markets precisely because there is already high customer demand for our services in those locations," said Christopher Ramsey, senior vice president and chief sales officer for Birch, in a release. "Bandwidth consumption is on the rise and with our extensive, premier Metro-Fiber network customers can access superfast connections with speeds up to 500 Mbps to meet their growing business needs."

Expanding its on-net fiber footprint complements the 31,000 fiber route miles Birch has already built in 22 U.S. markets, but this latest buildout drive is just part of a broader plan the service provider has set for this year.

Earlier this year, the service provider began an extension of its fiber-based services in three of its fastest growing markets--Houston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.--that would serve an additional 60 on-net buildings. In 2015, Birch has set a goal to serve more than 800 lit buildings nationwide.
