Birch's Covista acquisition extends its presence into 10 new states

Birch Communications has completed its acquisition of Covista Communications' assets, a deal that furthers its business, wholesale and residential customer reach in 10 states.

This is Birch's seventeenth acquisition since 2006. By purchasing Covista, which has switching centers serving various markets in both Tennessee and New York, Birch will immediately expand its IP network to 10 states.

With this acquisition complete, Birch now provides services to SMB customers in a total of 45 U.S. states.

In addition to the network footprint, Chris Aversano, COO for Birch, said in a release that the acquisition "greatly enhances our Hosted-PBX, SIP-Trunking and Carrier Services (wholesale) product offerings."

SIP trunking and wholesale services are two areas in which Birch has dedicated resources to over the past year. Last November, the CLEC began offering SIP trunking, a product that's typically relegated to larger businesses, for both multisite and single-site SMBs that are looking to cut their monthly communications spending and avoid delays in activating new lines.

While Covista is Birch's latest acquisition it likely it won't be its last. Vincent Oddo, Birch's CEO, has said in recent years that it will continue to look for "tuck-in" acquisitions that can add complementary service and network assets.
