Brazil names Intelig, GVT and Embratel as national broadband network contractors

Telebras, Brazil's state-owned service provider, have awarded Intelig, GVT and Embratel two-year contracts to provide necessary transit and wholesale services as part of its National Broadband Program (PNBL).

Under the terms of the agreements, the trio will be tasked with delivering data between points of presence in key Brazilian cities.

The contracts were divided up into 12 segments and totals $43.2 million amongst the three providers: Embratel won a BRL 22.7 million (USD 13.9 million) to provide broadband services in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; GVT won a BRL 14.4 million (USD 8.82 million) contract to provide services for Brasilia and Fortaleza; and Intelig won a BRL 33.6 million (USD 20.57 million) will provide services in Sao Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro.

With its $6.1 billion broadband plan, the Brazilian government has reestablished Telebras, the former state telecom monopoly with hopes to expand broadband service to 68 percent of homes by 2014.
