Broadband present in 94% of households with Internet service, says LRG

Consumers who have an Internet subscription are more likely to purchase a broadband service, according to a new Leichtman Research Group report. In its eleventh-annual Broadband Access & Services in the Home 2013 study, LRG said that nearly 78 percent of U.S. households have a broadband Internet service in their homes.

Out of the 1,304 households that participated in a telephone survey, broadband is present in 94 percent of all households with Internet service at home, up from 92 percent in 2012.

The study also highlighted the growth of standalone broadband service and the presence of smartphones.

Nine percent of households get broadband but don't subscribe to a multichannel video service from a cable operator or telco. Also, 64 percent of broadband subscribers use a smartphone to access the Internet, up from 52 percent last year.

"Despite an increasingly limited base of potential new subscribers, and some consumers opting to solely access the Internet on a smartphone, broadband will continue to grow at a modest pace for the next few years," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for LRG.

Broadband availability has also increased in recent years, with less than 1 percent of all online households saying that broadband is not available in their area versus 6 percent in 2008.
