BT announces 'intelligent' VPN services for enterprises

BT has launched its Intelligent Virtual Private Network (iVPN) service in 172 countries. The service is designed to allow multi-national organizations to better manage and improve the performance of their IT network and business applications, as well as reduce technical and operational costs.

Development of BT iVPN is being credited to the company's investment in its 21st Century Network (21CN) global platform built on IP and enabling BT to roll out services through software upgrades. BT says iVPN enables businesses to reduce technical "running costs" and improve productivity by allowing them to manage and prioritize traffic over their IT networks across the world, which drives operational cost savings through faster implementation, fewer manual interventions, and less interruptions to services. There's also local support in local language.

BT has run iVPN trials with industrial and finance services customers and intends to combine it with other BT services (after all, it is the 21CN network) such as application optimization, voice management, video conferencing, call centers, UC, security and mobility.

It will be interesting to see how BT squares off with AT&T and Verizon for the "large corporation" segment. Verizon Business recently rolled out a service for global CPE deployment for multinationals with the distribution infrastructure to make sure gear moves to more than 120 countries.
