BT expands broadband into Cornwall

Residents and businesses of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, UK have something to look forward to besides pigeon races: BT, along with the Cornwall Council, is expanding broadband into the area with a GBP 132 million investment supported by EU funding.

Under the agreement, TelecomPaper reports, BT is investing GBP 78.5 million and the Convergence European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) an additional GBP 53.5 million. A range of different broadband technologies will be deployed, but BT says that fiber will be the prevalent buildout, with 80-90 percent of businesses and homes getting high-speed connections.

Even better to hear--even if it's just from a boilerplate company release--is the broadband expansion will create about 4,000 jobs in the region and preserve another 2,000 existing jobs.
