Businesses favor a hybrid cloud model, says Savvis

Savvis, CenturyLink's (NYSE: CTL) data center and cloud subsidiary, said in a new study they conducted with Vanson Bourne that enterprises will outsource almost 70 percent of their IT infrastructure by 2018.

What's driving the move to the cloud is a number of factors, including the lack of in-house technical expertise and new business applications.

While 65 percent of IT infrastructure resides inside of an enterprise's own network, the study said that the majority of businesses will migrate to the cloud on an evolutionary, not revolutionary basis. Many businesses will get to an outsourced cloud solution through hybrid approaches to colocation managed service models.

Today, many of the cloud services that are used are for nonessential applications such as storage and e-mail.

About 90 percent of the survey respondents said that the dominant cloud applications they use today are storage and e-mail applications, while slightly less than half of IT leaders employ cloud for intranet, website and microsite applications.

Jeff Von Deylen, president of Savvis, said in a release that while cloud is a big piece of the outsourcing pie, it's only one part.

"As businesses grow and move more IT infrastructure to outsourcing providers, they will adopt a strategic mix of colocation, managed-hosting and cloud services," he said.
