Cablevision says it's ready for DOCSIS 3.0

Tools

During its earnings call Thursday, Cablevision says it has wired the bulk of its network with DOCSIS 3.0 and will announce a high-speed service for residential and business services "shortly."

A precise launch date hasn't been given yet. Currently, Cablevision's fastest DOCSIS service is 30 Mbps, slower than Comcast's more recent offering of 50 Mbps and - more significantly --Verizon's 50 Mbps FiOS offering. Verizon FiOS currently passes about 1.5 million homes in Cablevision's footprint.

However, Cablevision thinks most early users of DOCSIS 3.0 will be small business customers, not consumers. The company isn't expecting to make a whole lot of money with the technology at the beginning as it spends $300 million over two years to deploy both DOCSIS 3.0 and WiFi.
