Calix and Hatteras bond over the broadband stimulus

Looking to help Tier 2 and Tier 3 ILECs make the most of their broadband stimulus grant awards, Hatteras Networks and Calix have struck a new Ethernet development and solution partnership. Calix and Hatteras said they developed the partnership based on feedback from independent ILECs participating in the Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program (BTOP). The joint solution and development efforts include not only the interoperability of Hatteras' Ethernet over Copper (EoC) solution with Calix's (E5-120) product, but also the integration of both vendors' products into Calix's ODC-100 outside plant cabinet.

As part of the alliance, Calix also certified Hatteras' EoC products through its Calix Compatible Program, a multi-vendor interoperability and compatibility certification program that allows service providers to evaluate emerging technology solutions that employ disparate hardware and software elements. To complete the certification process, Calix tested the Hatteras' EoC products' ability to handle various functions including Ethernet backhaul transport, fault handling, and network management, as well as application and stress testing. Having a vendor build an ecosystem of compatible hardware and software will take guesswork out of a smaller carrier's hands as they leverage their existing copper networks to provide Ethernet-based business services, IPTV and DSLAM backhaul.
