Canada finally launches do-not-call list

After much hype and delay, Canada finally rolled out its do-not-call service for citizens tired of pesky telemarketers' frequent calls. Landlines, cellular lines, and fax lines are eligible to be added to the do-not-call list, and customers can get on the list by calling one of two toll-free numbers, 1-866-580-3625 or 1-888-362-5889, from the line they wish to put on the list. Web registration is also available here, but as of press time, the site was down.

Under the Canadian regulation, telemarketers have 31 days to update their call lists once a citizen requests to be placed on the do-not-call list. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission will monitor the do-not-call list and all questions and complaints about non-compliance should be directed to the CRTC. Violations of the law will result in hefty fines of up to C$1,500 for individuals and C$15,000 for corporations.

The list will not stop all unsolicited calls however, as charities, political parties, newspapers, pollsters and companies that customers have used in the past 18 months can still access all numbers without penalty.

Citizens must update their status on the do-not-call lists every three years.
