Cavium Networks OCTEON II gets lots of ATCA support

Cavium Networks announcement this week of its OCTEON II multicore MIPS64 processor has garnered a lot of support from the telecom OEM community. Enea, Kontron and RadiSys are among the players which have announced support for the smoking hot new chip family.

The new OCTEON II Internet Application Processor (IAP) family will deliver up to four times the performance over its previous generation chip family used in networking, wireless, storage and control applications. New features include anywhere from one to 32 CPU cores and up to 75 application acceleration engines - specialized silicon for QoS, packet processing, TCP, compression, encryption, RAID, de-duplication and regular expression functions. There are also on-chip tweaks for power optimization.

Enea will support Cavium's new OCTEON II with its real-time operations systems, networking protocols, middleware management system and dSPEED data plane management platform.

Kontron intends to incorporate the OCTEON II into its ATCA AdvancedMC I/O modules for such network applications as media gateways and wireless base station applications.

RadiSys, among the first companies to deliver solutions based on Cavium's first-generation OCTEON multi-core processors, plans to use the silicon in a variety of ATCA products for telecommunications equipment manufacturers (TEM) packet processing solutions.
