CenturyLink restores 911 service in Washington, Oregon

CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) has restored its E-911 services throughout Washington and Oregon after systems in both states were down, reports The Olympian.

As of 4:09 a.m. PST Thursday, CenturyLink said it had fixed the problem in Oregon but the 911 outage continued to affect Washington. Reports of the outage began at about 1:30 a.m. PST.

Kerry Zimmer, a CenturyLink spokeswoman, said the E-911 service was restored by 6:30 a.m. in Oregon and 8 a.m. PST in Washington.

She added that the problems began in Sheridan, Ore., and spread into multiple cities throughout the state.

Zimmer and Washington state Emergency Management Division spokeswoman Wendy Freitag said that there were no reports of emergencies where people could not get help due to the outage.

At this point, CenturyLink could not pinpoint whether the problem was due to a hacker or an equipment malfunction. During the outage, some phone lines worked while at other locations, no phones worked at all.
