China set for telecom shake-up

Tools

The news reports seemed to be changing in tone by the hour, but according to some filed this morning U.S. time, the Chinese government may be nearing a restructuring of the nation's telecom industry that would see No. 2 mobile carrier China Unicom have its GSM and CDMA wireless businesses separated. The GSM business likely would be merged with wireline telco China Telecom and the CDMA business merged with fellow telco China Netcom. Top mobile player China Mobile would round out a new three-horse competitive race.

An industry restructuring has been rumored for months and even as recently as this morning, various reports out of China debated how soon it will happen. Some say it's imminent or will happen in March, others say it's doubtful to happen before the completion of the Beijing Olympics later this year.

In my public speaking presentations on Mobile WiMax and TDSCDMA since May, 2007 I've been forecasting this exact situation because the Chinese Government knows no more than 3 carriers will be able to make money delivering wireless services inside CHina, and I predict both WCDMA and CDMA 2000 EVDO will obtain licenses this year, along with TDSCDMA, the real question is will dual mode TD-SCDMA handsets be ready for the Beijing 2008 Olympics and also will Mobile WiMax continue to be held hostage or be adopted for use in the Olympics? My prediction is yes! China has been developing OFDMA technology through American CHinese invested companies like Broadstorm/Adaptix and others for a number of years already. I deliver public speaking presentation on Smart Phones, Converged Mobile Devices and Mobile WiMax in Greater China, please feel free to contact me.
